Interpreting the Bible

In September of 2011 Vineyard Churches hosed a Theology Day at Gateway Vineyard Dartford, where the topic was ‘Interpreting the Bible’.

The speaker at this event was Stephen Burnhope, who talked through this subject to the assembled Church leaders, Church Planters, preachers and small group leaders.

Two videos were recorded at this event, both of which are available to view by clicking below.

Stephen Burnhope lives in Buckinghamshire in the U.K. and is part of North Thames Vineyard, High Wycombe. He was awarded the Master of Arts with Distinction by the London School of Theology and began his PhD in 2010. His MA dissertation was on the atonement and contemporary culture. Stephen is married to Lyn, a religious education teacher and fellow MA graduate of LST, with four children and one grandson.

John Wimber Position Papers

John Wimber was a founding leader of the Vineyard. His influence profoundly shaped the theology and practice of Vineyard churches from their earliest days until his death in November 1997. When John was gripped by God he was, a "beer-guzzling, drug-abusing pop musician, who was converted at the age of 29 while chain-smoking his way through a Quaker-led Bible study." Shortly after John became a Christian, he became a voracious Bible reader. The Scriptures excited him, and finally after reading for weeks about life changing miracles in the Bible and attending boring church services, John asked one of the lay leaders, "When do we get to do the stuff?"

"What stuff," asked the leader. "You know the stuff here in the Bible, the stuff Jesus did like healing the sick, raising the dead, healing the blind. You know, stuff like that!"

"Well, we don't do that anymore," the man said to John. To where John replied, "You don't? Then what do you do?" "Well, we do what we did here this morning," the man replied. John answered, "You mean i gave drugs up for that?" John had much passion for the Scriptures, but he also often said, "It's not enough to be Biblically literate, we must also learn to be Biblically obedient."

In John's first decade as a Christian he led hundreds of people to Christ. By 1970 he was leading 11 Bible studies that involved more than 500 people. Under God's grace, John became so fruitful as an evangelical pastor he was asked to lead the Charles E. Fuller Institute of Evangelism and Church Growth. He also later became an adjunct instructor at Fuller Theological Seminary where his classes set attendance records.

Not only was John the leader of the Vineyard Movement, he was an evangelist, worship leader, songwriter, and pastor. However John is most renowned for his practical application of the Gospel in order to ‘do the stuff' that Jesus did.

His impact on the church world-wide is still evident today, even since his passing in 1997.

Rick Williams Preaching from Genesis: Part 1. Biblical Themes and Theology

Rick grew up in Australia and studied Theology and was ordained in this country. Following 8 years of pastoral experience on staff of other churches (including John Wimber's church in California), Rick and (his wife) Lulu headed up the planting of Riverside Vineyard Church.

They have two children, Chloe and Michael. They take a leading role in shaping the church's basic foundations, direction and vision as well as overseeing several other areas of church life.

Together they serve on Council for The Association of Vineyard Churches (UK), are Regional Co-ordinators for Greater London and give oversight to a number of Vineyard churches. Rick also serves on the Board of Vineyard Bible Institute.

This talk was recorded in a seminar at the Vineyard Churches National Leaders Conference 2010, where Rick talked about the biblical themes and theology from Genesis.

There is possibly no other Biblical book over which there has been more controversy and scepticism. Yet Genesis is fundamental to understanding the whole Bible.

Genesis lays rich theological foundations on many diverse themes that engage the contemporary preacher: building community, gender equality, the environment, judgement, imputed righteousness and the gospel of grace. These seminars will help you integrate and teach these themes in a local church.

Why is the Kingdom of God so Important

In this Position Paper, Derek Morphew talks about how the theology of the Kingdom plays a unique and crucial role in the historical legacy of the Vineyard.

This paper looks back at the roots of the Vineyard movement and how we place great importance on inaugurated eschatology, as per the ministry of Jesus. Derek also looks at how John Wimber initiated the model of “empowered Evangelicals” with a Kingdom praxis and left us with a legacy of Kingdom theology.

How to prepare biblically sound sermons

Vineyard Theology Week 2010 - videos

During November 2010, Rick Williams, Senior Pastor of Riverside Vineyard Church in London, presented three public talks on the topic “A Changing Church for a Changing World”. These talks were part of the second annual Theology Week, held at Wharfedale Vineyard in Leeds.

Rick tackles the topic of the church, certainly in the West, facing a huge challenge. Is the challenge, however, a threat or an opportunity? The threat tends to be seen in the unprecedented rates of change in society, and the shifts in cultural and religious practice. The opportunity comes in the form of equally unprecedented openness to issues of God, spirituality, and meaning. Both are good reasons to stop and re-evaluate the essential call of the 21st Century Church – the call to mission in Leeds.

To what extent do we need a changing Church for a changing world? How do we shape the Church so that it is true to biblical imperative and cultural awareness? These questions will be examined over three evenings, under the headings “The Changing Culture”, “A Theology of Mission” and “Shaping the Church for Mission”.

Rick, together with his wife, Lulu, planted Riverside Vineyard Church 21 years ago, from which 14 churches have been planted. He read theology at Cambridge University went into the ministry originally with the Church of England and has a Doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary.

These talks are spread over four videos.
